Results from a specialized survey regarding Critical Illness revealed some important facts that individuals and families should consider.
*More that half (55%) of consumers are very or extremely concerned about being able to make key payments such as mortgage, car insurance and child care if they were to become disabled or hospitalized.
*61% of those that have experienced, or had a spouse experience, a critical illness encountered unanticipated expenses.*One in five American would fund uncovered medical expenses with a credit card if they faced a serious illness such as a heart attack.
*Individuals are interested in having critical illness insurance.
A PERSONAL STORY - I didn't expect to experience acute renal failure and cancer simultaneously several years ago, but I did. From my initial hospitalization to nearly two year recovery, thankfully..most of my medical bills were paid for by my medical insurance. What they didn't cover was the fact that I was unable to work and generate any sustainable income level for most of this period.
Three years ago, my wife didn't expect to shatter her left femur and mangle her right shoulder and wrist in a home accident. By the time all was said and done the medical bills totalled in excess of $600,000. Many uncovered items such as physical therapy, durable medical equipment, home health visits and loss of employment put a tremendous financial strain on us. We didn't expect or PLAN for this.
I tell you this personal story to let you know that things like this can happen to anybody.
Roughly two-thirds of indirect medical expenses are NOT covered by health insurance - such as cancer. loss of income for self and family members, travel, etc.
Two million Americans will file bankruptcy because of medical expenses. That represents 50% of all bankruptcies. Approximately 79% had health insurance. Their out-of-pocket expenses averaged $13,460.
QUESTONS:
*Do you want the best possible health insurance that includes specialized coverage for critical illness expenses?
*Do you know anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer, had a heart attack or stroke?
*Was the quality of life affected?
*If you had one of those conditions, would you rather I send a get well card or a check?
